One of the soldiers was from the Light Dragoons, the other from the Parachute Regiment. The explosion took place while the soldiers were on operations in Musa Qala in Helmand Province.

The servicemen have not been named but their families have been informed . The deaths bring to 165 the number of British service personnel killed in Afghanistan since conflict began in late 2001 . The vaccine, developed by the National Cancer Institute(NCI) and called gp 100:209-217, or gp 100, helped shrink tumorsand delay worsening of the disease in the study. In the 185-patient trial, those who received the vaccine hada statistically significant response rate of 22.1 percent,meaning 22.1 percent of patients had their tumor shrink by atleast half. That compared with a 9.7 percent response rate inthose who received only Interleukin-2 (IL-2), researchers said.

Patients in the vaccine plus IL-2 arm also experiencedprogression-free survival -- the time before the disease startsto worsen -- of 2.9 months compared with 1.6 months in thecontrol group, according to results presented at the AmericanSociety of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting in Orlando onSaturday . There was also a trend toward overall survival benefit seenin those receiving the vaccine . But the extension of life didnot reach statistical significance and so could have been bychance, though researchers found it to be encouraging . "The findings represent a significant step forward fortreatment of advanced melanoma," Dr .
